Description:

The Wild Horse and Burro Technician assists land management staff in the care, monitoring, and management of wild horse and burro populations on public lands. This position supports the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program and Range Programs by collecting field data, monitoring herd management areas, supporting the noxious weeds program, maintaining facilities, and assisting with gathers and adoptions as needed. The role is highly field-based and offers hands-on experience in range monitoring, resource management, and animal husbandry. The selectee will assist the full-time staff with monitoring, data collection, noxious weed control project work, and Herd Management throughout the Field Office. Additionally, the selectee will gain experience with general Range work including spraying weeds, inspecting range improvements, and compliance checks.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with monitoring herd health and range conditions
  • Assist with data collection for Herd Management Area and Gather Plans
  • Assist with documentation, record keeping, and file management
  • Conduct water source condition monitoring
  • Conduct vegetation utilization and vegetative trend monitoring
  • Assist in maintenance and construction of range improvements
  • Maintenance of wild horse corrals
  • Assisting with wild horse trapping and feeding
  • Assisting with the noxious weeds program and range program

Qualifications:

  • Must be age 18+
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Incoming, current, or recent SUU student preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interested or coursework in animal science, rangeland management, wildlife biology, or related fields
  • Ability to work around large animals safely and follow handling instructions
  • Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather and remote locations
  • Basic skills in data collection, GPS navigation, and computer software (Excel, GIS preferred)
  • Good teamwork and communication skills for working with staff, partners, and the public
  • Physical ability to hike, ride in 4x4 vehicles, carry equipment, and perform manual labor
  • Preference will be given to individuals with trailering and livestock experience

Schedule: Mon-Thurs, 7:00am-5:30pm
